World Masters Orienteering Championships kicked off with sprint
Posted on | July 4, 2012 | Category: News
The biggest IOF Event of the year, the World Masters Orienteering Championships with 4000 participants, kicked off with sprint qualifications and final in the city of Goslar, in Germany. The qualifications were held in sunny weather, but the final day provided some rain showers for many of the competitors.
According to the organisers, many local people showed their interest in the event: they watched from their windows or at the arena, cheered for the runners and asked about the rules and procedures of orienteering.
Home nation Germany was successful in the sprint with two gold medals, three silver and one bronze. However, it is Switzerland (5-2-4) and Sweden (4-7-7) that lead the medal statistics before Great Britain (4-3-0).
The World Masters Orienteering Championships continue with long distance qualifications on Wednesday and Thursday and long distance final on Saturday. For more news, results and photos, please visit the organisers homepage.
