PostFinance World Cup weekend: Swiss success on home ground

Today’s Middle distance race proved a great success for the home country; first place and joint second in the women’s race, first, third and fourth in the men’s.
Strong favourite Simone Niggli won her fourth World Cup race in succession by 44 seconds ahead of Minna Kauppi, Finland and Judith Wyder, Switzerland who shared second place. They also had a big lead, 54 seconds, over fourth-placed Tatyana Ryabkina, Russia.
Home runner Matthias Kyburz had a narrow victory – by just 4 seconds – over in-form Olav Lundanes, Norway. Baptiste Rollier and Matthias Merz came third and fourth respectively, ensuring three Swiss flags on the podium. A large gathering of home spectators had plenty to cheer about.
The race took place in typical Swiss low-alpine terrain with steep slopes and rocky ground, mixed forest and rough pasture, and it was perhaps not surprising that the Swiss team did well.
The PostFinance Sprint takes place tomorrow in St. Gallen.
