MTB Orienteering World Cup: Poland hosts second round

Elite mountain bike orienteers will get to know Poland quite well over the next couple of years; in 2013 the European Championships will be held there, and in 2014 Poland is the venue for the World Championships and Junior World Championships. This week the best mountain bike orienteers from 18 nations will gather in south-west Poland for the second round of the 2012 World Cup.
The programme consists of 3 races on successive days starting on Friday 1st June: an urban Sprint, a Middle distance race and a mass-start Long distance (one-man-relay format). The Sprint will take place in and around the town of Duszniki-Zdrój, close to the border with the Czech Republic, and will include some of the town’s narrow streets as well as urban and forest terrain. The other two races will be on mountain terrain with plenty of climbing; in these events the riders are allowed to go off-track in addition to riding on the various tracks and paths.
The Sprint race on Friday starts at 15.00 using a 1:5 000 scale map with estimated winning times of 20-25 minutes for the 5.2 km (women) and 6.3 km (men) – both of these distances being the optimum routes.
After the first round, Marika Hara, Finland has a good lead in the World Cup standings with 14 points more than Christine Schaffner-Raeber, Switzerland. Another Swiss rider, Maja Rothweiler, is third with 25 points fewer than the leader. The men’s standings are much tighter – Samuel Pökälä, Finland leads by 2 points from Luca Dallavalle, Italy with Beat Schaffner, Switzerland third, just one point further down.
