Simone Niggli’s new training methods

Simone Niggli is mother of three small children and today again the best orienteer in the world. The Swiss is in fact better than ever. “I have had very good co-operation with Vroni König-Salmi recently. She has given new input in my training”, Simone says.
The incredible Swiss with 17 gold medals at World Championships is again back in business just eight months after she became mother to the twins Anja and Lars. “It’s going very well. I like to be back”, she says.
Successful comeback
Today she won the middle distance at the first final of the first World Cup round and the European Orienteering Championships. “It went very well. It was a nice terrain and a good course. I really liked it, but I had to fight all the way”, Simone says.
Her big goal this year is the World Orienteering Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland in July, and she hadn’t really expected to be in top shape already at the start of the World Cup. But her race was nearly perfect: no mistakes and fast speed.
More planning
Last autumn Vroni König-Salmi, also a World Champion, became the personal coach of Simone Niggli. The two amazing orienteers have together planned a little more structure into Simone’s life.
“Earlier Simone didn’t plan the training sessions so much, other than the last month before the World Championships. Now we plan much more. In her training there is also more power training to strengthen the whole body. She has also started to run with a heart rate monitor and can take rest days. Well of course not days without traning”, Vroni smiles, “but she can run one and a half hour in a not so fast speed. She is almost too eager to become good fast, but we planned so as not to take too fast steps and there was also a lot of water running in the begin, as it is not so hard for the body.”
“I am training less hours than before, but I am doing better training and I have improved a lot. In March I ran faster than ever in a test. I also feel that I am stronger mentally. The children have mademe more relaxed”, Simone says. “Of course it’s a lot of work with three small children, but it works.”
Simone Niggli is again impressing a lot in the forest.
