Orienteering World Cup: Round 3 this weekend in Czech Republic

This weekend Round 3 of the World Cup in Orienteering will take place around Liberec in the northern part of the Czech Republic, not far from the borders with Germany and Poland. There will be two races, over middle and long distance.
Leaders in the World Cup standings Annika Billstam, Sweden and Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland have both set up quite big gaps to the second-placed runners and will be looking to firm up their leads in this round. Nearest challengers in the women’s standings are Merja Rantanen, Finland and Linnea Gustafsson, Sweden, just one point apart, with Lena Eliasson, Sweden and Helena Jansson, Sweden (currently IOF World Rankings leader) close behind. Matthias Merz and Matthias Müller will be aiming to keep it a Swiss top-three in the men’s standings; Olav Lundanes, Norway and Thierry Gueorgiou, France have the best chance of overtaking them.
The middle distance race, the 7th race in the 10-race 2011 World Cup, takes place on Saturday morning with courses of 5.3 km for the women and 6.5 km for the men. On Sunday there will be a strong physical as well as technical challenge, the women running 10.5 km with 480 m climb and the men 16.5 km with 690 m climb. This race will have a chasing start, the start times being based on the elapsed times in Saturday’s race.
The terrain is described as hilly spruce forest with many big re-entrants and spurs. Former mining activity adds to the detail, and there are areas with large amounts of granite rock.

The World Cup Finals take place in Switzerland next weekend, i.e. on 1st and 2nd October.
