MTBO European Championships & World Cup: Czech Republic wins both relays
Posted on | September 21, 2011 | Category: News
The Czech Republic had outstanding success in the relays today, winning both women’s and men’s races and gaining overall victory in the 2011 World Cup.
Neither of the joint leaders in the World Cup standings before today, Finland and Switzerland, were able to make their mark in today’s races – the best result from them was women’s bronze medals for Switzerland. The Finnish women’s team was unlucky in that middle distance world champion Ingrid Stengård suffered a bike defect early in the race which lost her a lot of time.
Both races were quite intense. The women’s race ended in a sprint finish for the line, Renata Paulickova for the Czech Republic finishing a hairs-breadth in front of Russia’s Ksenia Chernykh. Both were given the same finish time. Switzerland was never quite up with the lead but finished only 7 seconds down. In the men’s race the winning lead was 19 seconds, with Russia again getting the silver medals. There was a sprint finish here for the bronze medals, Austria just sneaking in ahead of Switzerland.
The Czech Republic finishes with 78 points in the final World Cup standings. In second place is Switzerland (74), third Russia (70) and fourth Finland (66).
