The French phantom Thierry Gueorgiou had to speed up on the middle distance. The course wasn’t that challenging – for him.
On the map it looked extremely tricky, but Thierry had been training in much more difficult terrains. “I had expected less visibility. It was so open between the trees. It was possible to look a very long way”, he says.
His planned technique for the race had to be changed. He speeded up. “But I also felt tired. On the long leg, up to the seventh control, I told myself that the seventh was the last control on the course and I should run the best I could”, he says. The long distance race was still a bit in his bones.
This was his ninth World Championships gold medal. One more gold is the goal. The French team wants to win the relay. They have been very close to doing so in recent years.
During the middle distance race his thoughts were going back a few years. “It was very similar to how it looked in Switzerland when I got my first gold at middle distance”, he says.
