Annika Billstam has been working very hard with sprint this year and really wanted to run that at the Championships. The Swede didn’t get selected for the sprint, but the long instead, and won her first Championships gold.
“It’s incredible”, she smiles. She had a gap of 4:28 minutes to Dana Brozkova on second place. Her winning difference was one second more than her boy friend Thierry Gueorgiou’s difference.
“I like sprint and was heading for that. I also wanted to do it better, but when I didn’t end up with that I changed my focus on what I should take part in, she says.
On the long race in the heat she looked for paths and tried to make the orienteering as safe as possible. “From the start of the race I looked for how to orienteer safely, and I continued to do that all the way, she says. During the race she made just one little mistake.
