Three Swedes got the medals in the women’s race. That all three were previous Championship or World Cup winners in sprint is what today’s winner Linnea Gustafsson thinks is the best thing of all.
Linnea again won an international sprint race. In June she had her first World Cup triumph when she won the first World Cup race this year. In Chambery it was her time again.
“I had a great race”.
“And felt you were going to win?”
“No, I was focusing on what to do, but I wouldn’t say that I am running in a tunnel. I can see things happening around me when I run”, she smiles.
All the three Swedes at the top have got medals in sprint earlier. Lena Eliasson got a medal in 2007 when the World Championships were in Ukraine. Helena got silver also last year and got gold in Hungary.
The Swedes train a lot at this distance. “And the women are supporting and helping each other to do well”, Annichen Kringstad says. The former world star of orienteering won six of six possible gold medals in the period from 1981 to 1985. Now she is responsible for information work in the Swedish Orienteering Federation. After the sprint there was really something to publicise.
For Linnea there is only more chance to run in these Championships – the relay. “I wanted to run more individual races, but wasn’t picked for more”, she says.
