Tight at the top in World Trail Orienteering Championships

Posted on | August 17, 2011 | Category: News

At the end of day 1 of the World Trail Orienteering Championships, just a few seconds at the timed controls separated the top placings in both the Paralympic and Open classes.

In the Paralympic class the overnight leader is Dmitry Kucherenko, Russia, ahead of Rolf Karlsson, Sweden, by 3 seconds at the timed controls. Both scored 21 out of the maximum possible 22 points. In third place is Arne Ask, Norway, with the same points score but somewhat slower in time.

Kreso Kerestes, Slovenia, a previous world champion, leads the Open class by 2 seconds over Martin Fredholm, Sweden, another competitor with an outstanding results record. In third place is Great Britain’s John Kewley. All three scored maximum points, and 8 seconds separate first from third in time. In fact just 19 seconds in time separate the first six in the current standings.

The Championships conclude today, with the finish arena shared with the foot orienteering long distance final.
