Switzerland has as their goal a total of three medals for women and men this year. Last year Switzerland was the best nation.
“My personal goal is two medals, one individual and one in relay, and if you ask the other team members, we will probably together have a bigger goal than the federation”, says Daniel Hubmann.
This evening he took part in the Opening Ceremony in the centre of Aix-les-Bains in wonderful sunshine and with a large audience. 52 nations are taking part this year, a new record.
For the Swiss it isn’t a long journey to these championships. It’s less than 100 kilometres to the border. The forest terrain here is not at all like at home, but the sprint is more traditional. In the sprint races in the World Cup so far, Switzerland has taken almost all the top places among the men.
The pregnant Simone Niggli-Luder is not taking part this year. Therefore it will not be so easy to finish as the best nation again, but a target of three medals is not very high.
“But it’s better to achieve more than the goal, than have the goal too high”, says Daniel.
