Minna Kauppi, Finland, won her qualification heat for the second day running in the middle distance qualification, giving her one of the last start times in the final on Friday.
After an up-and-down season so far, Minna has come into form at just the right moment. Her compatriot Merja Rantanen was also a heat winner, and Lena Eliasson of Sweden won the third women’s heat. Winners of the men’s heats were Valentin Novikov, Russia, Anders Nordberg, Norway and Peter Öberg, Sweden.
Pasi Ikonen, Finland was unfortunate to miss qualifying by just 2 seconds.
Today the Championships Opening Ceremony will be held at Aix-les-Bains in the late afternoon, and the sprint qualification and finals take place tomorrow.
Reports, interviews and pictures from the races can be found in the ‘Around the Arena’ section at the foot of the IOF front page.
