Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: Gold for Alexandersson after problems in long distance

Posted on | February 5, 2011 | Category: News

Tove Alexandersson broke a ski on the long distance, but in the sprint the Swede did everything perfectly and got her first individual gold medal in ski orienteering.

“Really good to make it”, she smiles. After the long distance she was a bit disappointed. She was just 11 seconds after the Norwegian winner Barbro Kvåle even though she had had big problems during the race. “I broke my ski near the start of the race and then had to use it for a very long time. I lost a lot of time”, she says.

On the sprint the very experienced orienteer had full control all the way and won her fifth gold in junior orienteering. She has twice been a member of a winning relay team, and in foot orienteering she has won the middle distance championship two years in a row.

The 18-year-old athlete goes to a high school for orienteering in Sweden, but they are also skiing there. Tove is very strong on skis and also good at amending her technique to match changes in terrain. Individually she had two  silver medals before the sprint race.

– Why are you doing so well in sport?

– It’s this I am burning for.

– What is most fun?

– During the foot orienteering season I feel that that is the most interesting. In winter time when I am doing ski orienteering that feels to be the most fun sport, Tove smiles.

The long distance winner Barbro Kvåle ended second in the sprint. 19 seconds was the difference between the two best.

The Swede Tove Alexandersson is one of the very best orienteers of her age, both in summer and winter.
