Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: Multitalented winner

Junior World Ski Orienteering Champion Barbro Kvåle enjoys the challenges of ski orienteering out in the forest.
Just like the junior men’s winner, Barbro took part in the Junior World Championships in cross-country skiing until Monday of this week. “Ski orienteering is more exciting than cross-country skiing. So much can happen out in the forest and there are different challenges both in the orienteering and technically with the skis. Suddenly there can be a tree in front of you”, she says.
Just 11 seconds in front of Tove Alexandersson, the double champion in middle distance from Junior World Championships in foot orienteering won her second title in a row on the long distance.
Barbro had taken part in just three ski orienteering races before the start of the Junior World Championships this winter, but she has done plenty of training and a lot of orienteering during the year. Last summer she took a medal at the Junior World Championships in mountain bike orienteering. She also has medals from duathlon and triathlon in youth championships in Norway and has played football and run cross-country races, but cross-country skiing is still the number one sport for the Norwegian. “Ski orienteering is more interesting, but outside the races themselves there is more publicity and excitement with cross-country skiing”, she says. At the cross-country championships she was tenth in the sprint, the only discipline she took part in.
“My body felt in better shape at the long distance here”, she says.
Barbro’s home is in Brandbu, a village about 100 kilometres from Lillehammer, but now she is studying in Lillehammer, just 15 kilometres from the venue for the championships.
