Daniel Svensson is matching his sister Eva by winning races in the Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships.

– How many times has Eva won in Junior World Championships?

Well, I don’t really know, Daniel laughs.

The 19-year-old athlete from Mora won the long distance, the first race of the championships, which are being held about fifteen kilometres from the Olympic city Lillehammer in Norway.

“I didn’t use full speed at the start”, he says. But the Swede got the feeling for the map and his orienteering from very early on, and did very well throughout the race. He finished 30 seconds in front of his team-mate Anton Sjökvist.

The gold medal winner was competing in the FIS Nordic Junior and U-23 Cross-Country World Ski Championships in Otepää in Estonia, last week and until Monday of this week. He finished 26th, 33rd and 43rd individually and eighth in the relay. “I wanted revenge after Otepää and I’m not tired. On the sprint day I also only took part in one race, and there was a day without a race between almost every competition day”, he says.

Daniel’s sister is a junior world champion in both orienteering and ski orienteering. From the summer championships Eva has one gold. In winter she has won five golds, two in 2005 and three in 2007. There is a five year age difference between the sister and the brother.

– What have you learnt from Eva?

– To have fun, smiles the winner.
