There were three heats for both women and men with the top 15 in each heat through to the Final. The women’s qualification heats were held first. In two cases, however, there was a dead heat for fifteenth place, so there will be 47 runners in the women’s Final. Heat winners were two Danes, Maja Alm by an impressive 31 seconds and Cecilie Friberg Klysner, and the Russian Galina Vinogradova who beat Tove Alexandersson, Sweden by 3 seconds.
21 nations have athletes in the women’s Final, 9 nations having all their athletes through. These are Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Great Britain, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
The men’s heats were won by Yannick Michiels, Belgium, and the two Swiss stars Daniel Hubmann and Matthias Kyburz. The tightest win was that of Michiels, 1 second faster than Jonas Leandersson, Sweden. There was one dead heat for 15th place, so 46 athletes run in the Final. Here, 22 nations will be represented in the Final, and 10 nations have all their athletes through: Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Some nations with just one athlete in a Final will be disappointed, others delighted! These nations are Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Hungary, Ireland and South Africa.
Most well-known name to miss out on a Final placing was Andrey Khramov, Russia who missed the cut by 1 second.
