European Youth Orienteering Championships start on Friday in Slovakia

Four hundred athletes representing thirty-five nations are now arriving in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia for the European Youth Orienteering Championships (EYOC). There are three races: a Sprint, a Long Distance and a Relay.
These championships are for classes M/W 18 and M/W 16 and have become very popular in recent years. The first race is the Sprint, taking place in the heart of Banská Bystrica in an area that has not previously had an orienteering map. It is a hilly historic town with narrow streets, ideal for such a race. After the Sprint, in the afternoon, the Opening Ceremony and Sprint prize-giving will be held.
The Long and Relay races take place on Saturday and Sunday respectively and share the same arena at Suchy vrch. Here the terrain is described as continental hilly with varied runnability. There are some near-impassable steep slopes and some cliffs in places – to be avoided when making route choices – and some old mining areas that have a lot of contour and other detail.
These championships are always a great social occasion, where athletes often make lasting friendships with athletes from other countries.
Full details are on the event website www.eyoc2017.com, which will carry live results throughout each race and full results once they are declared official.
