WOC 2020 new sprint format: Successful tests in Italy

Two different knock-out sprints were successfully tested during the MOC camp in Italy last week; one with mass start (NORT-style) and one with chasing start based on qualification results.
– We had some good tests in Gargano in cooperation with PWT Italy, with strong, relevant starting fields and fierce competition, says Áron Less, IOF Foot Orienteering Commission chair.
The NORT-style with a time-trial qualification heat followed by semi-final and final with mass start and forked legs was one of the tested formats. The chasing start was the second format; a time-trial qualification followed by semi-finals with chasing start based on the qualification race and then followed by a final also with chasing start based on the semi-finals. The chasing start knock-out sprint was tested with non-forked legs.
The IOF Foot Orienteering Commission will evaluate the tests in detail and will also send out a questionnaire to the participants.
– Further tests will be carried out during the year. The goal is to propose a suitable third sprint WOC format for the IOF Council for their meeting in October 2017. In 2018 we will do some more fine-tuning of the format, but the basics need to be approved this autumn so that the WOC 2020 organisers can start their preparations, says Áron Less.
IOF Foot Orienteering Commission member Janos Manarin was attending the MOC camp as an organiser to find out about the challenges of the proposed sprint formats from an organiser’s point of view.
Did the new sprint formats pose any special challenges for you as an organiser?
– As with all new formats, you discover something every day that you hadn’t thought of. For these two formats, it was mostly about the start procedure and keeping to predetermined times, while bearing in mind the TV coverage and the needs of athletes and organisers. For example, today (Monday 6th) we had three races in one day, so after each of the first two races we needed to produce the results and start lists in time for the next race.
