WSOC: Sweden won the most golds, but Russia the most medals

Sweden took five of the nine gold medals on offer this week, with Tove Alexandersson claiming a personal tally of three. But Russia won more medals overall – eleven compared to Sweden’s seven, counting team medals as one.
The two Swedish athletes Tove Alexandersson and Erik Rost were the stars of the Championships, winning 3 gold and 2 gold + 2 silver medals respectively. Polina Frolova, Russia won more medals than anyone else, however.
Sweden was clearly the dominant nation at the start of the week, but suffered from illness to two of their women’s team for the last two races. “We were very well prepared for this week”, said Erik Rost after winning the Long Distance title. The Russian skiers also upped their game as the week progressed and produced some impressive individual and team performances.
Special mention should go to Stanimir Belomazhev, Bulgaria, winning the first ever men’s gold medal in SkiO for his country in the Middle Distance race. His joy and celebration at the end will be remembered for a long time. Equally memorable was the split-second bronze-fourth place outcome at Long Distance, the verdict going to the Norwegian Lars Moholdt by a hairsbreadth.
Many other memorable moments occurred in the sunlit surroundings of Krasnoyarsk in a week of competitions well organised by the Russian hosts.
