NORD is a cooperation between the four Nordic orienteering federations in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. At the recent NORD meeting in Copenhagen the three Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were invited.
The seven countries decided to form a new and extended NORD group:
– It was an inspiring meeting in Copenhagen. We got to know each other better and we do hope to contribute to develop orienteering within our seven countries. I look forward to meeting again, chairwoman Astrid Waaler Kaas says.
Deputy chairman of the Estonian Orienteering Federation’s board, Sixten Sild, agrees that the meeting was successful:
– All three Baltic orienteering federations were pleased to be invited to the NORD group meeting. Nordic federations and the club structure in Nordic countries have been a good example for us when we have built up our structures. Baltic orienteers are frequent guests in Nordic competitions and most of our best sportsmen compete for Nordic clubs, because it helps them a lot in their development. Baltic O-federations have organized many IOF major events since 1995 and now we are facing the biggest challenges when WOC 2017 and WOC 2018 will be held in Estonia and Latvia. It feels right to join our competences in the region in order to coordinate our activities and to generate new ideas and initiatives together. Our first meeting was optimistic and promising, he says.
As well as the admission of the three Baltic countries to the NORD group, the meeting was about exchanging good ideas and cooperating on different projects. It included discussions about regional development, map scale, anti-doping, TV-broadcasting and international championships. On the Saturday evening, the meeting participants changed to running clothes and head torches, and went for a run in the local forest on a course with permanent controls.
Next meeting is planned to take place in Tartu, Estonia, during the WOC 2017.
