Middle Distance: new golden chance for Tove Alexandersson
Posted on | August 22, 2016 | Category: WOC news

The forests south of Tanumshede play host to the Middle Distance race on Tuesday, in which Sweden’s Tove Alexandersson, World Cup leader and European Champion in this format, will be striving to win her first ever WOC gold. She is the very last starter at 17.10.
Tove Alexandersson, regarded as one of the very strongest of the women athletes, is one of a number of top stars who are concentrating on the forest races and haven’t competed in the sprints in Strömstad. Another is Ida Bobach, Denmark (start time 17.02) who is current Long Distance World Champion; she is running Middle and Relay this year because of problems with her Achilles throughout the winter. She has prepared herself as well as possible and has shown before, the first time with a silver medal whilst still a junior, that she is a force to be reckoned with in this format.
Already double world champion Maja Alm, Denmark starts in the middle of the field at 16.24.
Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland will be defending his title starting at 13.56, but will be strongly challenged by his team-mate Matthias Kyburz, the European Champion, whose start time is 14.04. The rules allow Switzerland to have three runners additional to these two, and their strength in depth will for sure be apparent in the results. Olav Lundanes, Norway won the first World Cup Middle race this year, and Sweden’s biggest hope for a medal in the men’s race will be Gustav Bergman.
The very first starter in the men’s race represents a new nation in the World Championships, Egypt. His name is Mohamed Abd El Baky.
The arena is dominated by two huge parabolas and one smaller one, no longer in use, erected in 1970 to transmit TV and radio programmes to foreign countries via satellite. There is a large sloping grassy area for spectators with the big arena screen in full view as well as the run-in to the finish. Viewers at home have available the IOF LiveCenter for continuous live coverage on the web – buy your ticket now!
The day starts with the men’s race at 11.45.
