World MTBO Championships: Relay wins for Finland and Austria

In the final race of the Championships, an experienced Finland team put in a strong performance to take the Women’s Relay crown, whilst in the men’s race a close finish between the top three teams resulted in a surprise victory for Austria. The Czech Republic takes the Relay World Cup title.

Marika Hara was the star in the Finnish women’s team, coming up from fifth to seventh on the second leg. Susanna Laurila rode strongly on the last leg to come to the finish 1.26 ahead of Russia who were second throughout. Bronze medalists were the Czech team who held third place throughout and were just 6 seconds down on Russia at the finish.

No-one outside their team had considered Austria as potential gold medalists, but Kevin Hasselsberger, Bernhard Schachinger and in particular Andreas Waldmann on last leg had other ideas. Waldmann went out fourth and at the end of an exciting last leg he came to the finish 8 seconds in front of the Russian star Anton Foliforov, with Jussi Laurila of Finland a further 3 seconds back. There was then a gap of 2.40 to the fourth team, the Czechs, who were leading after the first leg.

The race started with one point separating the Czech Republic and France in the Relay World Cup standings. The Czechs had the better day and end up as winners, with France second and Finland third.

In the Junior World MTBO Championships Relay, France took gold in both women’s and men’s classes, by 0.52 and 2.38 respectively.
