France won the opening race of the Championships, the Mixed Sprint Relay, with a gap of 1.50 over the second-placed Czech Republic team. Third, a further 42 seconds down, was Finland.
The race was for teams of two, one woman and one man, racing 2 legs each in the order W-M-W-M. Gaelle Barlet gave the French team an outstanding start, establishing a 1½-minute lead by the changeover. Baptiste Fuchs continued with a quality ride of his own and with soundly-ridden third and fourth legs the team had a big lead at the end. This was a big win for France whose team has grown steadily in quality and numbers over the past couple of years.
Fastest male rider on both the second and last legs was Anton Foliforov, Russia. Fastest female rider on the third leg was Cecilia Thomasson, Sweden, 31 seconds faster than Gaelle Barlet.
The Russian team ended in 7th place. The Danish, Italian and Spanish teams were all disqualified for mis-punching.
The Championships continue tomorrow with the first individual event, the Sprint.
