Helena Jansson: “I have to be careful”

At the end of the Sprint Relay in Halden there was a big smile from Helena Jansson as there very often is, but there have also been tough times over recent years.
On the last leg there were three teams in front: the Swedes Helena Jansson and Emma Jansson went out together with Judith Wyder for Switzerland. They were a bit in front of all the other teams – 38 teams in all. Soon there were just two teams in front, the two Swedes. At the very end it was Helena Jansson taking the victory. She had again run a near-perfect orienteering race. Lillian Forsgren, William Lind and Jonas Leandersson were the other three in the winning team.
Helena is for sure back in business! In 2011 the Swede got a medal at every distance at the World Championships in France. After that she has had a lot of injuries. In September 2013 she was operated on both feet. She was back again at international level last year, but she again suffered much pain. In September 2014 she had to be operated on one foot again.
She showed strength on the last leg. “My level? Physically I think there is still a bit up to my level in 2011 when I was on my best level so far, but in navigation I am better than ever”, she says.
Helena will not take part in the Sprint tomorrow. “I have to be careful and not run so much. I am only running every second day, and haven’t been sure of my level”. But she will take part in the Middle Distance Race on Sunday.
– What kind of training will it be on Saturday?
“I will walk in the forest. I have never done much orienteering in any winter until the last one, when I have walked a great deal in the forest”.
The Sprint Relay was organised around Fredriksten fortress in Halden, with 2.5 km legs for the two women in the team and 3.0 km for the men, and a lot of climbing.
