Ski Orienteering World Cup: The old master is back!

Eduard Khrennikov, Russia, winner of 13 gold medals in Ski Orienteering World Championships and now 37 years old, was back at the top of the results list in the World Cup Sprint race today. It was a double for Russia, with overall World Cup leader Natalya Tomilova victorious in the women’s race.
Khrennikov, overall winner of the World Cup three times in the past and fourth in this year’s standings before today’s race, finished 9 seconds quicker than the young home star Stanimir Belomazhev. The Bulgarian is in his second year as a senior, having won gold medals at Middle and Long distance in the 2008 Junior World Championships. Third was current Sprint World Cup leader Kiril Veselov, Russia, 6 seconds slower than Belomazhev.
World Cup overall leader Olli-Markus Taivainen, Finland finished in 9th position after a half-minute mistake on leg 8-9.
The women’s race was also a close affair with Tomilova gaining victory by just 6 seconds over Norway’s Marte Reenaas, who was fastest on the last four splits of the 7-control course and on the run-in; only a relatively slow start let her down. Third was Alena Trapeznikova, Russia, having her best-ever World Cup race.
Tomorrow’s race is over Long distance with mass start.
