40 000 spectators, amongst them 72 orienteers, witnessed the spectacular opening of The World Games 2009 at a sold-out stadium in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei.
The IOC Vice President, Mr Chiharu Igaya, brought the best wishes from the entire Olympic Family to the athletes. He congratulated the organizers for a job well done and concluded: “Kaohsiung is ready”.
Mr Ron Froelich, President of the International World Games Association (IWGA), complimented the organizers for the environmental considerations during the planning. President Froelich wished the athletes the best of luck, saying that having the opportunity to compete at this multi-sport event already makes everyone a winner.
The participants were entertained by over 4000 performers in the 2.5-hour long Opening Ceremony. The evening ended with a dazzling display of fireworks.
According to Øystein Kvaal Østerbø, Norway, the Opening Ceremony was impressive.
-At the Opening Ceremony I really understood how big The World Games is. So many people, and the atmosphere; you feel that you are part of something big. It inspires me even more to perform really well tomorrow.
