Junior World Orienteering Championships: Sprint distance
Posted on | July 7, 2009 | Category: News
Jenny Lönnkvist, Sweden won her fourth Junior World Championships gold medal today in the first of this year’s races, the sprint, in Imer-Mezzano, Primiero, Italy. She won the middle distance race two years ago in Australia and the long distance and relay on home territory last year, so she is proving to be a real all-rounder.
Her win in today’s sprint was impressively convincing – a gap of 28 seconds down to the joint silver medallists, Ida Bobach of Denmark and Tereza Novotna, Czech Republic. A Norwegian and two Swiss runners made up the top six.
Four Swiss in the top six
Winner of the men’s sprint was Matthias Kyburz of Switzerland, bronze medallist in last year’s long distance race and fourth in last year’s sprint. Swiss domination of the top six was broken only by Milos Nykodym, CzechRepublic who took silver 13 seconds down on the winner’s time, and Søren Bobach, Denmark in 5th place. Brothers Florian (the younger, who had quite an early start time) and Severin Howald finished 4 seconds apart in 4th and 6th positions.
