What a day for Norway!

Siri Ulvestad (18) won her first gold. Olav Lundanes (19) won his second. Norway took four of the six medals in the long distance.
Olav has been a favourite for today’s race for a long time and he really felt the pressure before the competition. “It was tougher than I expected and I didn’t mange to eat any breakfast before the race. Everything I ate came up again, but I managed to eat a sports bar on the way to the start”, he says.
Siri’s goal is to be among the six best in the individual distances at JWOC. She was fourth in the sprint and took it all on the long. “I felt I was having a good race, so I said to myself that now I mustn’t make any mistakes”, she says.
Her race was perfect. Kine Hallan Steiwer took silver. Both these two best girls live in Oslo, but they are in different clubs – Siri in Heming/Njård and Kine in Lillomarka. Siri has one year left as a junior. Olav is in his last year and his goal for JWOC is a medal at every distance. He has achieved that so far, but he says that this last race was his toughest ever. “I can’t really remember what happened in the forest. My automatic pilot helped me doing the race. I have prepared for this race for a long time and have been thinking about the techniques and how to tackle the race”, he says.
There were also two more results among the six best for Norway. Some of the Norwegians were in Australia during the winter – clearly some successful preparation there!
“And we are working very well together”, says the junior trainer Kenneth Buch.
Norwegian Siri Ulvestad won gold, her compatriot Kine Hallan Steiwer took silver and Heini Saarimäki from Finland got the bronze medal.
The six best on the podium: Gold for Olav Lundanes (NOR), silver for Magne Dæhli (NOR), and bronze for Christian Bobach (DEN). Home runner Simon Upphill was fourth, Czech Stephan Kodeda fifth and Norwegian Torgeir Nørbech came sixth.
