World SkiO Championships: Long Distance golds for Engstrom and Moholdt

The Norwegian home crowd had plenty to cheer today when Lars Moholdt took the Long Distance crown by 52 seconds over pre-race favourite Andrey Lamov, Russia. In the women’s race, another gold seemed on the cards for Tove Alexandersson, Sweden but she was disqualified and victory went to her team-mate Josefine Engstrom.
Tove was very satisfied with her race apart from one crucial moment when she skied in error through an out-of-bounds area. A clear fastest time was translated into a disqualification, leaving Josefine Engstrom the winner by 36 seconds over the Finn Mira Kaskinen. The up-and-coming Russian Kseniya Tretyakova took the bronze medal; she was the fastest of three Russian athletes in the top six.
Andrey Lamov proved unable to repeat his Sprint performance and had to settle for the silver medal today. Staffan Tunis, Finland, exactly one minute slower than Lamov, was bronze medallist.
Junior World Champions at Long Distance are Isabel Salen, Sweden and Aleksi Karppinen, Finland, both enjoying comfortable wins. In the European Youth Championships the winner of W17, Liisa Nenonen, Finland had the biggest winning lead of the day (1.52) whereas Henning Sjökvist, Sweden took his second individual gold but by the narrowest of margins – 1 second – from Tommi Härkonen, Finland.
Tomorrow is a rest day, and the championships continue on Saturday with the Middle Distance (mass start) race between 10.00 and 13.00 CET.
