Miika Kirmula finished sixth in both Sprint and Long, and he expected the same on Middle Distance when he was finishing. The Finn lost half a minute on one control, and about 10–15 seconds on three others.
“I didn’t think about winning since I had made the mistakes, but the three smallest weren’t that big. They were by way of being certain on the way to the flag”, he says.
A victory was just what he achieved. “I can’t believe it”, he smiles.
Green clothes daily
The 19-year-old, who is taking part in his first JWOC, has been in the military for the past 10 months. “I don’t think I have managed to do all my training as well as I would like, due to the military. So the good result at JWOC is a bit unexpected”. The final-year junior is from Salo, in the southern part of Finland, where the last Nordic championship was organised in 2009.
Hard work, good results
For Finland the Championships in Borovets have been a big step forward. Olli Ojanaho took bronze on the Middle. Emmi Jokala took bronze on Long Distance and a lot of runners have been among the very best. The Finns have been working hard to get better, and are achieving results.
