World Orienteering Championships: 34 teams in Sprint Relay
Posted on | July 7, 2014 | Category: News

A record 54 nations have entered athletes for this year’s World Orienteering Championships being held in northern Italy, and 34 of these have entered 4-person teams (2 women, 2 men) for today’s Sprint Relay which takes place in Trento with the mass start at 17.30 local time.
This is the first time this relay format is a part of the World Championships programme. The running order for all teams is woman-man-man-woman and the estimated fastest time on each leg is 15 minutes, about the same as in an individual Sprint race. The medieval centre of Trento provides the setting for this event. You can follow the action live (web-TV, arena commentary, GPS tracking) by buying a ticket for IOF LiveCenter: go to http://shop.orienteering.org. This is the only way of accessing live GPS tracking from Italy. Past events can be viewed for free at http://livecenter.orienteering.org.
Today is also the first competition day in the World Trail Orienteering Championships. The TempO competition is in two parts – Qualification and Final. TempO is the TrailO equivalent of a Sprint competition in FootO, with competitors visiting a series of stations at which they have to give multiple decisions whilst viewing arrays of control flags out in the terrain, all against the clock. As competitors are seated at the stations, wheelchair users are at no disadvantage and so there is just one class.
A colourful Opening Ceremony for both Championships took place in the central square of Asiago yesterday, followed by the Medal Ceremony for the Sprint.
