Soren Bobach practiced running on flights of stairs

Just how to cross the bridges in Venice as fast as possible has been a part of Søren Bobach’s training during recent weeks.
For some it was a bit surprising that Søren Bobach was the winner. He wasn’t among the favourites, but with number bib 17 of 45 he finished with a time that no one could match. The JWOC champion from the Middle Distance eight years ago had done it again. “It’s just incredible”, he smiles.
One mistake
The men had a 4,4 kilometre long race with 20 controls. Bobach made just one small mistake, in the middle of the race. He thought there was a covered passageway on the map, but he had to turn around. “I lost about ten seconds on this mistake”, he says.
The Sprint plan
For months the Danes with Sprint hopes who train in Aarhus have met every Monday to talk about Sprint and find the best route choices on difficult Sprint maps. In recent weeks Søren has also done a lot of training just for Sprint. “I have been running on the stairs at the stadium in Aarhus to get better in running on them, especially on the way down”. In Venice there are a lot of bridges with stairs over all the canals. He had also looked on old maps. “I was well prepared”, he says.
The forest plan
At WOC last year he was working on getting media interest for the Championships at home. Just one year ago he could also again start running after injury. He didn’t how fast the volume of training could be increased. “I made a plan for this year to go for Sprint, since it isn’t necessary to run so much in the preparations for that distance”.
– What about forest?
“I will of course also work hard to get good again on Long and Middle distances”, he replies.
The big chance
The Danes took three of the six medals at the Sprint. There’s no doubt over which nation is the big favourite in the Sprint Relay on Monday. Before the Championships, Søren Bobach also saw that as the big medal chance.
