There is a new nation represented among the finalists in the women’s classes at the European Championships: an Israeli who likes to work hard over a long period, and that’s for sure a plus in the long final.

“I have reached my goal. Now I will have a good final”, Keren Ziv says. She is 35 years old and the first ever Israeli woman to have achieved a place in the A-final at both the European and the World Championships. Her team mates – three men – are of course very proud of her.

– How come you are doing so well?

“I can run, and I am better in long races, but for Tuesday it was of course a goal to run the shortest final – the B-final is 500 metres longer than the A-final”, she laughs.

The three men from Israel haven’t qualified directly to the finals, but they will all run in the Middle final on Monday since all athletes will take part in that. For the men, the relay is of course a big goal. “We want to be among the 25 best”, Pavel Gvozdev says. “And if somebody can’t take part, we have a good reserve in Keren”.

In the forest qualification races it has at times been something of a struggle, with a lot of thorny bushes, especially on the Long qualification. “This is just like at home. When you’ve finished your race, you can see that you’ve been in the forest”, Keren remarks.

In the finals it will probably be more open, but runners from the growing nations look forward to that and also to the future. “There will be many more Israeli girls making the finals in the coming years. There are a lot of younger girls coming up”, Keren says.
