Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: good start for Frida Sandberg
Posted on | February 19, 2014 | Category: News
Last year in Latvia, Frida Sandberg from Sweden won all the individual women’s gold medals in the Junior World SkiO Championships. This year, still a junior, she has set her stall out again with a clear win at Middle distance, the first race in the 2014 Championships in Estonia. Jonas Madslien Bakken, Norway, second at this distance last year, won the men’s gold.
Frida Sandberg’s victory was by 59 seconds over her compatriot Isabel Salen, with the Finn Suvi Oikarinen taking the bronze medal. Jonas Bakken won by 49 seconds, with Finland’s Aleksi Karppinen getting the silver medal and Sergey Gorlanov, Russia the bronze.
In the European Youth Championships, the gold medallists at Middle distance were Kaisa Rooba, Estonia by 42 seconds and Aleksandr Pavlenko, Russia by 2 seconds. The first three in the men’s race were all from Russia.
The Championships have been hurriedly moved to higher ground because of lack of snow at the original venue. The ski centre Pannjärve, 180 km from the Event Centre Põlva, has an adequate quantity of snow despite the generally mild conditions.
Tomorrow (Thursday) there is the Long distance race with mass start.
