Ski Orienteering World Cup: repeat wins for Alexandersson and Lamov

Posted on | January 19, 2014 | Category: News

In today’s Sprint race at Hamar, Norway, Tove Alexandersson and Andrey Lamov took victory for the second day in succession. Alexandersson showed strength and accuracy in the latter part of the course to come up to win by 9 seconds, whilst Lamov, fastest throughout, won by 14 seconds.

Steady snowfall made the conditions a little slower than planned for. In the women’s race it was the Russian Yuliya Tarasenko who made the early pace and led by 14 seconds at the 1.3 km point on the 3.0 km course. Second at that point was another Russian, Anastasiia Kravchenko, and Tove Alexandersson was third, a further 5 seconds slower. After 2.6 km Alexandersson was up to second place but still 14 seconds down on Tarasenko; Alexandersson picked up 23 seconds in the final 400 metres.

The strength in depth of the Russian men’s team was evident today with four placings in the top six. On a course of 3.7 km, Andrey Lamov was in front by 10 seconds after 1.9km with the Swedish athlete Ulrik Nordberg in second place. Russian Kirill Veselov was up to second place, 12 seconds slower than Lamov, after 3.2 km with another Russian, Vladimir Barchukov, third and these positions held at the finish. Nordberg finished fourth, 25 seconds down on Lamov.

Tomorrow the athletes have a day’s training booked on a part of next year’s World Championship terrain before they head off to Orsa Grönklitt in Sweden for the continuation of this World Cup round with the next race, at Middle distance, on Wednesday.
