Tove Alexandersson, Sweden enjoyed her first success in this season’s World Cup in the mass start Middle distance race today, the first race in the Cup’s second round. The Russian Andrey Lamov, leader in the World Cup standings, won the men’s race after being in front throughout.
Early leader in the women’s race of 8.2 km was the Russian Yuliya Tarasenko, but both she and Tove Alexandersson lost a lot of time up to the 3.0 km mark at which point Alexandersson was 15th, 3 minutes down on the new leader Tatyana Rvacheva who won all the individual races in the first round. Rvacheva still led after 5.0 km, but the situation was dramatically changed after 6.3 km where Alexandersson had taken a lead that she gradually extended on her way to the finish. Rvacheva finished 1.10 down in second place, and there was then a big gap of 2.13 to third placer Hana Hanciková, Czech Republic.
Andrey Lamov enjoyed a controlled race where he never looked in serious danger of being caught. He had built up a lead of 1.16 at the 5.0 km mark, and this was whittled down to 13 seconds at the end after Lamov lost a little time on one of the final sections of the race, his closest contender being home athlete Hans Jørgen Kvåle. Norway impressed with four finishers in the first six.
The next race is tomorrow, a Sprint at the same venue.
Stories and pictures from today’s race will be posted later today in the Around the Arena section accessed from the foot of this Home Page.
