IOF introduces a new concept for improving Event Quality

Organising events at the highest level is becoming more and more demanding. In order to better support its organiser partners and to better follow up on the implementations, the IOF Council has decided to introduce a new model for improving event quality.
Its main points are:
– Establishment and communication of standards
Event Standards shall be defined for all types of IOF major events. They shall be well documented, easy to understand and accessible through the IOF web portal.
-Stronger commitment requested from an applicant
The IOF will request a stronger commitment already at the application stage, including economic guarantees to implement an event to the relevant standard.
– The EA team, a stronger body for event advising
The IOF will support its event organisers with an EA team lead by an Senior Event Adviser. The team can consist of experts in different fields and will also include the national controller(s). For The World Games and World Championships in foot orienteering the EA team will be lead by the IOF Sports Director.
-The ESB, a new superior body
The Event Supervisory Board will be a new permanent structure appointed by and subordinate to the IOF Council, acting as the IOF’s superior body vis-à-vis an organiser. The ESB can act on its own initiative or on request by the EA team leader. This function has similarities to the way the IOC is working with its Olympic organisers.
Organising an international event is different from an event at the national or local level in almost all aspects. With the now decided change, the IOF wants to take the lead in communicating the standards and expectations at this level, and to do a better job in supporting and following up on its organiser partners. This new model will serve to achieve a higher event quality overall.
