World Trail Orienteering Championships: Kostova and Turto lead after Day 1

Posted on | July 10, 2013 | Category: News

Jana Kostova, Czech Republic and Jari Turto, Finland are the leaders in the Paralympic and Open classes respectively after the first day of competition in Vuokatti, Finland.

Kostova has a clear two-point lead in the Paralympic class over compatriot Paval Dudik, with Michael Johansson, Sweden in third place with the same points score as Dudik but a longer time. Kostova lost one point only in the day’s competition, which consisted of a course of 20 controls plus 4 timed controls, 2 at the beginning and 2 at the end.

In the Open class, both Jari Turto and Sweden’s Martin Fredholm completed the course without a mistake, but at the timed controls Turto was 50 seconds quicker than Fredholm. Antti Rusanen, Finland holds third place, the only competitor to have dropped only one point.

The course was on rolling forested sand-hill terrain with largely good visibility, and a good variety of complex map-reading problems was set.

Day 2 will take placetomorrow at Sotkamo, with again a course of 20 standard controls and 4 timed controls, and the finish will be in the stadium used for the WOC/WTOC Opening Ceremony.
