World Orienteering Championships, Long distance final: another gold for Niggli and Gueorgiou

Posted on | July 9, 2013 | Category: News

Simone Niggli won World Championships gold medal number 22 in today’s Long distance final, running 13.4 km in 1:20:02 to win by 1 second under 3 minutes. Thierry Gueorgiou, France was a clear winner of the men’s race, his sublime technique and fitness earning him victory by 1 minute 18 seconds over home favourite Jani Lakanen.

Tove Alexandersson, Sweden took the silver medal in a race on largely runnable and open forest terrain with a few thicker patches and marshes. The courses today had some very interesting route choice legs. The women’s bronze medal was won by Lena Eliasson, also from Sweden, faster than home runner Minna Kauppi by 36 seconds.

Jani Lakanen worked very hard to try to keep up with Thierry Gueorgiou, but had to settle for the silver medal on the 19.8 km course, the longest course ever in a World Championships final. Edgars Bertuks, Latvia took his second bronze medal in 2 years at this distance.

Wednesday is a rest day for the WOC competitors, and the first day of competition for the Trail Orienteers.
