Women’s long distance gold to Finland

Women’s long distance at the World Ski Orienteering Championships in Kazakhstan was a thriller to the end. Different forkings, many mistakes, and technically demanding courses made the race exciting for the spectators and the athletes. Russia’s Tatiana Kozlova was leading on the first loop, but made a big mistake of more than two minutes, and lost the lead to the Swedes Engström and Alexandersson.
Mervi Pesu, Finland, was never far from the lead, and finally on the last loop she attacked, and managed to leave both Engström and Alexandersson. Kozlova skied really fast behind the top three, and caught the Swedes at the second last control. She was fastest in the sprint, and won a silver medal, 0.5 seconds before Tove Alexandersson.
Men’s race started at 11:30 local time, which is 05:30 GMT.
