Arnesson – “Last summer, a gold seemed years away”

Peter Arnesson suffered from sickness for some months last year, but he is really back in business, and with better strength than expected so soon afterwards.

After a long break due to TWAR the Swede was training well from September/October onwards, with the big focus on ESOC and WSOC this winter. The plan was for him to be in his best shape in Kazakhstan (WSOC), and the goal before ESOC was to be among the six best.

On the long distance he had concentration and speed all the way. “It was an incredibly good race”, the 32-year-old athlete says. On the last of the three loops he was alone a lot and didn’t really know which position he had. “But I was skiing well so I thought I must be doing well”, he tells.

On the third-last control he saw Staffan Tunis, who finished third. Arnesson never saw Hans Jørgen Kvåle (silver medallist) at all. The winner picked up a national flag just before finishing, and even though he has five victories from earlier, it’s something very special with this latest gold. “It’s my biggest gold from ESOC, due to the problems I have had”, he says.

The five earlier golds were three in relays, one from Sprint and one from Middle. With this Long gold, Arnesson now has a gold medal from every discipline in ESOC.
