SkiO Tour kicks off new season

The European Championships in Latvia in February and the World Championships in Kazakhstan in March will be the peak points of the season for all of the world’s elite ski orienteers. The international ski orienteering season starts this weekend with a 7-event ‘SkiO Tour’ in France, Italy and Switzerland.
Madona in Latvia is the venue for this year’s European Championships, which consists of 3 individual races at Medium, Long (mass start) and Sprint distances, plus a standard Relay and a Sprint Relay. These events take place between 11th and 18th February.
The World Championships take place at Ridder in Kazakhstan from 3rd to 11th March. Ridder was the venue for 4 World Cup races in 2008, and ski orienteers were also racing in the World Cup in Kazakhstan last year. There are again 5 races in the World Championships: the same individual formats as in Latvia (with mass start for the Long distance race) and 2 Relays.
Almost all the top names in skiO have gathered in France this weekend for the curtain-raiser to the international season, the SkiO tour. Fourteen different nations are represented in the elite start lists. There will be two races in France (mass start Long distance and Sprint), two in Switzerland (individual start Long and Middle distance) and three in Italy (Sprint, chasing start Middle distance and team Relay). For certain multi-talented athletes, a hard decision has had to be made: the Oceania Carnival or the SkiO Tour? Sweden’s young talent with gold medals in both disciplines, Tove Alexandersson, has chosen to run the World Cup races in New Zealand, whereas well-known foot orienteers Alison Crocker, USA and François Gonon, France have opted for the SkiO Tour.
